The Atlantic Slave Trade — The Local Picture: Nick Radburn, Sunita Abraham & Geraldine Onek
At Litfest 2022, Will Pettigrew and Nick Radburn introduced Lancaster University’s huge research project into what became of the £20million compensation paid in 1837 to former slave owners, while members of Lancaster Black History Group, including Alan Rice and Sunita Abraham, presented their complementary work based on community research in the city. At Litfest 2023, we are proud to welcome them back to hear what the latest research has uncovered and how this changes and deepens our understanding of our history.
In this event, Nick Radburn will talk about what his research has revealed about the slave trade in Lancaster and the Northwest, with a wealth of local examples. Sunita Abraham of Lancaster Black History Group will talk about the community research that led to the ‘Slavery Family Trees’ exhibition, and Geraldine Onek will outline the educational project for primary schools she has pioneered. All three will discuss the relationship between university and community research and how each helps the other.
Nick Radburn is a lecturer in the History of the Atlantic World 1500-1800 at Lancaster University.
Sunita Abraham is an associate lecturer at Lancaster University, co-convenor of the Lancaster University Sanctuary Network and a member of LBHG.
Geraldine Onek is a primary school teacher, an honorary researcher at Lancaster University and a founder member of LBHG.
