Graphic Novels & Ice Cream: Matthew Dooley — Flake

Matthew Dooley’s Flake was the first graphic novel to win the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for comedic fiction.

Howard’s aspirations are modest. As long as he can sell ice cream and get the crossword done, he’ll be happy. Find out what happens when his world collides with the rampant ambition of his ice-cream nemesis, Tony Augustus, in this story of fate, friendship and fighting back. The event may involve ice cream (providing Howard can get through).

“Matthew Dooley’s elegiac debut Flake [is] warm, affectionate and full of outrageous puns. Walt Whipman, anyone?” -Guardian

Matthew Dooley is a cartoonist from the Northwest of England. He won the 2016 Jonathan Cape/Observer/ Comica Graphic Short Story Prize. Flake is his first graphic novel.
